Learners Embrace the Summits Programme

The Summits programme is well underway, and our learners are already embracing the opportunities, challenges and experiences that come with this exciting new chapter.

The Summits programme is well underway, and our learners are already embracing the opportunities, challenges and experiences that come with this exciting new chapter.

At the heart of the programme is preparation for adulthood and the world of work. Alongside vocational learning and opportunities to explore different workplaces, learners have started to develop the holistic life skills that support them in everyday life, from managing money and understanding their priorities to caring for their environment, regulating their senses and reflecting on their experiences.

Learning at Summits extends beyond the classroom. During a morning in Central, our learners took time to pause and listen carefully to the surrounding soundscape,  an opportunity to develop awareness, sensory regulation and mindfulness while engaging with the city around them.

The learners have also begun exploring the world of work through job observations, including a visit to Central Market. These experiences provide an opportunity to see different working environments first-hand, observe the roles people undertake and begin to consider their own interests.

Practical life skills are another important part of the Summits experience. During one session, learners worked together to identify their priorities and create a budget for a week. Activities such as these help turn everyday concepts into meaningful, practical learning experiences, while encouraging learners to develop independence and confidence in making decisions.

Just as in adult life, there are the everyday responsibilities that come with being part of a community. After a busy week, learners spent time looking after and cleaning the Summits space, taking shared responsibility for the environment they learn and work in.

The opening weeks have been carefully designed to help learners become familiar with the programme, minimise anxiety, stimulate excitement about learning and give everyone the opportunity to settle in with confidence. We have been hugely impressed by the enthusiasm, curiosity and willingness to participate.

The journey has only just begun, and we are looking forward to a productive, purposeful and exciting year ahead.
